VOX-POP:  TRANSPORTATION COST REALITIES

A month ago, the University of Ibadan announced through a special release an upward review on intra campus transportation fares due to the fuel scarcity in the country.

Awo hall press met with hall residents to ask for their opinion on the impact of the transportation fare review in their daily lives this semester and if transportation should be readily available for Awoites due to the review.

It actually affected me greatly but I would just start with the fact that even outside of coming into UI, things are already expensive. My mind was working with the fact that they might actually increase the money but not up to N100, I’ll be sincere. I was thinking like N70, but I still thought of the fact that the change ish will cause issues. But when I saw that they resulted to N100 I knew it was the end. Double price just overnight like that! But we don’t have any choice.

It affected me greatly because there was no increase as per money from home, so I get to suffer the increase in school. When I mentioned to my family that they increased the fee for transportation in school, they jokingly told me to reduce the food I was eating to support the transport. So, it affected me a lot because I used to budget N100 to come back to the hall from Vet(I hardly cabs in the evening). So, what I would do would be to take N50 from vet to gate and then N50 to Awo. But now! N100 to gate, N100 to Awo.

Now I trek from Vet to gate and then enter hundred naira to Awo. So, it actually has affected the fact that I have to be tired throughout the day and I still have to trek down because I’m trying to save money. Most of the times I’m extremely tired, so I pay the 100 naira but deep down it’s affecting me negatively.

To be very honest it has made me more rational about my spending, I don’t spend on transport unless its necessary.

Personally, I’ve experienced some type of discrimination from the Napep riders, most especially from the gate. They’d be like “We are not going to Awo” and it makes me feel like I did something wrong, like I committed a sin because of how they treat us Awoites. Its not fair. So, I think there should be a review that should make transportation readily available for Awoites.

If we are to talk about me, it didn’t affect me much. Because I’m not really someone that goes out. But my friends that go out, had their movements reduced. The price is actually high so they’d rather wait till what they’re doing outside accumulates a bit before they go out, to reduce the costs of tfare.

Since transportation prices have been reviewed, the price is already better for the drivers, I think they should make transportation convenient for Awoites.
