Awo Hall Literary and Debating Society emerged one of the winners at the ASIDO Campus Network preliminary inter-hall oratory contest held on Saturday, 16th September, 2023, in preparation for its main event tagged Matters That Matter: Sincerely Speaking, Suicide scheduled to hold at the end of the month.
The oratory contest included speakers across all halls of residence except Queens and Idia Halls who were absent.
Awo Hall faced Kuti hall, the current Jaw War champion on the topic Less Talk, More Action: Actively Preventing Suicide. Miss Adewumi Obisesan representing Awo Hall emerged as the winner with 87% against Kuti Hall’s speaker with 61.17%.
Miss Adewumi, who also won overall best speaker asserted that she wrote the speech herself and rehearsed the delivery with her friends with the assistance of the president of the Awo Hall Literary and Debating Society. She also acknowledged God’s help in the process. Adewunmi mentioned she envisioned winning against her opponent but not emerging as the best speaker at the event.
At the event, Mellanby Hall faced ABH on the topic; #LoveAndLight: A Culture of Performative Anti-Suicide Advocacy in our Digitalized World, with ABH speaker emerging as the winner with 83.67%. This was just a little point difference with Mellanby’s speaker who had 81.67%
Zik Hall faced Bello Hall on the topic; Mental Health Literacy: The Past, Present and Future. Bello Hall’s speaker emerged as the winner with 73% while Zik Hall’s speaker emerged with 71%.
Indy Hall’s speaker spoke unopposed on the topic ‘Substance Abuse and Suicide: Where do the lines meet?’, and emerged with 79.67%. Tedder Hall’s speaker also spoke unopposed on the topic, The Present Reality of Students’ Mental Health in Nigerian Institutions, emerging with 59%.
The five halls to proceed to the final round on 30th September are Obafemi Awolowo Hall, Sultan Bello Hall, Independence Hall, Alexander Brown Hall and Lord Tedder Hall.
