
The Sigma Chief’s League, tagged ‘GAME ON!’ was held at the University of Ibadan SUB pitch, featuring a competitive tournament with 16 male and 12 female teams, where only one team from each category could emerge as the winner
The tournament, which began on January 22, was concluded on February 4, 2023, with the male and female categories running concurrently within the span of two weeks. The tournament, which incorporated a rigorous screening process to ensure fair play, was exclusive to undergraduate and postgraduate registered students at the University of Ibadan, with DLC students disqualified during the screening.
In the female category, the tournament commenced with a thrilling knockout stage, where six teams battled it out for a chance to advance to the next round. The excitement continued as the teams then entered a league point format, vying against each other in a series of matches to accumulate the most points. The competition was fierce, with each team determined to emerge victorious. After a series of intense matches, ASSE emerged as the champion, with Statistics closely following in second place.
Simultaneously, the male category kicked off with a home and away knockout stage, where eight teams battled it out for a spot in the next round. The competition was fierce, with each team determined to outmaneuver their opponents. After a series of thrilling matches, the field was narrowed down to four teams: Prime FC, TomTom FC, Soccer For All, and Galacticos.
The excitement continued to build as the teams faced off in the home and away quarter-finals. TomTom FC emerged victorious against Prime FC, securing a 1-0 win in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Soccer For All (SFA) delivered a dominating performance, defeating Galacticos with a resounding 3-0 victory. The stage was set for an epic showdown between TomTom FC and SFA in the final match.
THE FINALS
The final matches of the Sigma Chief’s League took place on the 4th of February, 2024. It included unique and entertaining match between the Old Sigmites and Loyal Sigmites, bringing together participants in a spirit of friendship and sportsmanship. In this thrilling contest, Loyal Sigmites emerged victorious with a narrow 2-1 win, further solidifying the bonds of camaraderie among the participants.
In the male category, the third-place match took place, with Prime FC delivering a commanding performance against Galacticos, securing a resounding 4-1 victory. The team showcased their skill and strategy, outmaneuvering their opponents and dominating the match from start to finish. With this impressive win, Prime FC solidified their position as third place in the tournament.
The eagerly anticipated final showdown between SFA and TomTom captivated the attention of the entire university, with enthusiastic supporters flocking to the SUB pitch to witness the epic battle. The riveting match lived up to its hype, ending in a thrilling 3-3 draw that left fans on the edge of their seats. Ultimately, SFA emerged victorious in a penalty shootout, securing the championship title in the Sigma Chief’s League.
The event drew an impressive crowd of over 950 attendees, including esteemed guests such as the Sigma Chief, acting Sports director, Students Union President, and His Executives, as well as Special Guests, Old and Loyal Sigmites. The success of the league served as a testament to the unity and sportsmanship among University of Ibadan students, demonstrating that even academic tensions could be set aside in the name of friendly competition.
The top three teams in both categories were recognized at the award ceremony, which took place shortly after the tournament. In the male category, Ibrahim of SFA, a 400L Law student, was named the Most Valuable Player. Korede of Prime FC received the title of highest goal scorer, with an impressive 5 goals. In the female category, Suliyat and Sylvia, both from the Statistics department, shared the highest goal scorer title, each scoring 6 goals.
The completion of the Sigma Chief’s League showcased the splendor of bringing together University of Ibadan students through their collective love for football, fostering a sense of unity that transcended academic and social boundaries. The tournament served as a platform for students to engage in friendly competition, display their skills, and share in the joy of sports.
