The end-of-session break for the 2023/2024 session has come to an end, and the new session is off to a fresh start. The first day back can be a whirlwind of emotions for both returning students and freshmen alike; however, the key task this period is maintaining 100 percent composure.
For our freshmen, some of whom are leaving home for the first time, this transition may be filled with uncertainty. On the other hand, for some returning students, this resumption is very well received, as house chores have almost taken their steeze level into the negatives. Some students who underwent IT, TP and PYTP at various places of assignment may not have even had any holiday to begin with—nonetheless, resumption is here.
Restarting school after the break elicits conflicting reactions. A sinking feeling rushes over you as you slowly approach the school gates, a familiar knot of anticipation tightening in the pit of your stomach, a physical reminder that a new session is about to begin. But despite the all-too-familiar dread, a glimmer of joy appears. Joyous squeals resound throughout the faculties and resident halls, especially the female halls, as buddy groups reunite after a few months away. A few hugs here and there, eager life updates exchanged as pals make up for lost time. Reassuring themselves with a wave of relief, familiar faces brighten as they return to the familiar pattern of school life.
Specifically, our freshman may experience some form of anxiety. School is a lively social bubble where one must venture outside of their comfort zone to be informed and take advantage of opportunities. Making the effort to network and join new groups or organizations can be intimidating, but developing acquaintances is a rewarding way to get by in the fascinating, if occasionally overwhelming, world of college. As a freshman, adjusting to the schedule of classes can be challenging because of things like having to get up early for 8 a.m. classes and juggling assignments, projects, and presentations. For this reason, do not be afraid to ask for assistance when you need it—whether it be with course registration, directions, or anything else—UItes are always happy to help.
A deliberate approach is required to make the most of this new session, including efficiently navigating the semester and accomplishing your academic objectives. Here are a few useful strategies to help you increase your productivity and have a semester full of learning and accomplishment:
• Plan: As cliché as it may sound, planning goes a long way in ensuring success. In the hustle and bustle of university life, it’s easy to get carried away from your goals. Effective planning can help one properly visualize ideas and goals. This process not only clarifies your path but also helps you identify potential roadblocks and solutions.
• Stick to the plan: Creating a schedule is just the first step. Sticking to it is the real challenge. Many students fall short on their meticulously crafted timetables. Make a conscious effort to commit to the tasks you’ve set for yourself. Unexpected events may arise, but consistency is key.
• Set priorities: This is an integral part of planning. Prioritization helps you make informed decisions when faced with competing demands. For example, some students prioritize challenging courses with a greater impact on their GPA, while others focus on subjects they find more difficult. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Identify what matters most to you academically and plan accordingly.
• Healthy living: Students often mismanage their health. While the daily mental gymnastics that go on in one’s head while trying to settle on a meal to eat out of the same five options every day can be exhausting. Staying healthy will significantly improve your focus and concentration in academics.
• Network: Get involved in activities of interest. There’s a community for all at the University of Ibadan. Hone your skills, gain experience, usher yourself out of your comfort zone, visit new places, try out new things, and make new friends.
• Time management: Being able to make the most of the 11 weeks allotted for teaching prevents “la cram la pour” and excessive stress as exams approach.
• Review past performance and identify weaknesses: The book of life has nothing on you. Take charge of your academic journey and learn from your mistakes. A fruitful semester awaits!
These are some of your best years. Live, learn, and take in all that the University of Ibadan has to offer. Strive to attain your personal, professional, and academic goals this session. Welcome back to school!
