The fresher’s orientation weekend at Obafemi Awolowo Hall was held throughout the weekend from 12th to 14th July, 2024.
The events of the weekend started on Friday afternoon with the Muslim prayers which were held by 2pm at Awo mosque.
The prayers were followed by the common pot and gyration at Awo quadrangle later in the evening. Members of the common pot planning committee started preparing the beans for the common pot around past 4pm. The cloudy weather on that day made everyone wonder if the common pot night was going to be successful, especially when the rain started drizzling. The planning committee kept cooking as though they were so sure the rain wasn’t going to keep falling. The rain eventually stopped drizzling and the event went on. Towards past 7pm, fresher’s started appearing at the basketball court followed by other stalites. The sharing of food commenced much later around past 8pm and the floor representatives for each block were mandated to be present before the food could be shared to their floor members, those whose floor representatives weren’t present had to wait till those who had their floor representative present had been served. Later on when the queue was reduced, everyone was allowed to take part and benefit from the Common pot.
The sports day was held on Saturday morning. The current sports director, along with the former sports director mobilised the freshers at the basketball court before they all left for a jog outside the hostel. The main orientation program scheduled for 10am on Saturday didn’t begin until past 11am. The hall warden and other hostel supervisors spoke to the freshmen of Obafemi Awolowo Hall giving them advice important to their stay in school. Security tips were also given to the freshmen along with a handbook containing the rules and regulations of the hall. There was an unwind session of games and dance after the speaking session.
The fresher’s orientation weekend was wrapped up with the Christian prayer on Sunday, July 14th. The prayers started at 6pm with singing and then prayers followed.
