Congress held at Awo hall on Saturday, 16th November, 2024. The Congress started at 8:50am and was organized for the review of the constitution of the hall of residence. The review include matters such as the aims, objectives, membership, privilege, obligation, offenses and punishment, organs of the hall and all that are contained in the constitution. It was also stated that the congress was to hear the opinions and questions of Awoites regarding the constitution.
The invites guests in the person of the of the former queens hall chairperson, speaker and chief judge of faculty of law, Zik hall chairperson and Indy hall chairperson, amongst others were introduced. Their presence was to observe and provide expert opinion on issues raised.
The constitution was read section by section by the congress host and Awoites were asked for their opinions regarding each section. After the reading of the constitution concerning offense and punishment, a member of Awo hall raised a question whether not paying fine denies one access into the hall. The president replied no to the question, but further explained that to make sure that people pay the fine, the hostel supervisors could take other steps forward but denial into the hall isn’t one of the steps.
Moving forward, attention was drawn to what the criteria for being a member of H.R.C. should be. The speaker said, such person need to buy a form when purchase of form is opened, campaign and will be voted for if wanted by the residents of Awo hall.
Regarding the members of the executive, the Hall warden, Doctor Afolasade Adewumi said, the attorney general should not be a member of the executive as she is the “number one” law officer. Then she called for an adjustment.
One of the major concern of Awoites was that the defense committee members does things that are outside their duties. One of the guest speaker suggest that there should be an independent defence team. This comprises of student that has once been or current in any para military organization. Also, the minister of defense will be elected within the team and by the team but must be ratify by the executive for recognition. The hall warden further said that this will constituted next session, as any registered member of Awo are free to join.

It was further stated that any misconduct in the hall must be reported. This followed the report that was made by a member of hall expressing how an exco aggressively and rudely approached her. The speaker then said “respect is reciprocal, as one must not disrespect the excos neither should the excos disrespect any member of the law”.
One of the conclusion that was drawn is that, anyone that will be elected as a member of the executive council must have once been in any form of leadership position either in the faculty or department or in the hall. It was also stated that every member of the health committee should be a student of any medical related department.
