The Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan (UCJ UI), held her 36th induction ceremony and Global Campus Journalism Summit 1.0 on November 30, 2024, at the KAAF Auditorium, Department of Human Nutrition. The event provided a platform for campus journalists to learn from experienced journalists and gain insights into mainstream journalism.
In attendance were distinguished speakers, representatives of the Union of Journalists from other universities, alumni of the union, and lecturers.
The first session of the summit centered on the theme “PR, Propaganda, Press” featured a panel discussion with guest speakers, including the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho.
Addressing the issues surrounding “PR, Propaganda, Press,” the Commissioner emphasised that “the main goal of journalism is reporting.” He clarified, “PR can be coloured, but Journalism can’t be coloured.”
The second part of the summit focused on “Leveraging Less Prominent Niches in Inclusive Reporting,” with contributions from experienced speakers in the field who shared valuable insights on this aspect of journalism.
The event ended with an award presentation recognising outstanding campus journalists and guest speakers who had made significant contributions to campus journalism.
Additionally, the campus magazine “Campulse” was officially launched. During its review, the Editor-in-Chief of the Union, Mr. Tijani Abdulkadir, revealed that the magazine was sponsored by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho.
Other highlights of the ceremony included oratory displays and speeches by representatives from other journalism unions. The ceremony concluded with a speech from the head of the summit, Miss Susanna.
