Celebrating Mother’s Day: A Tribute to Mothers

Motherhood is not just about the biological function of childbearing. It is much more than that. Mothers are the foundation of families and the pillars of society. They are mentors, caregivers, and protectors. Every year, we celebrate Mother’s Day to honour the sacrifices, love, and strength of mothers. While this day is dedicated to them, it does not mean that our appreciation is limited to just one day. Mothers deserve to be celebrated every single day for the invaluable role they play in our lives.

Motherhood is a journey of selflessness. A mother ensures that, despite life’s storms, her family stands tall. She smiles even in the face of challenges, carrying the weight of her loved ones’ dreams on her shoulders.  Buchi Emecheta, in The Joys of Motherhood, wrote, “The joy of being a mother was the joy of giving all to your children.” This bond is profound—one of unconditional love and irreplaceable devotion. The Nigerian singer, Asa captures this sentiment beautifully in her song So Beautiful, singing, “Woman there is no one like you. Oh, woman there is no one like you”. This world is such a lonely place without you.

A mother’s wisdom does not end with her. As the saying goes, “When the mother cow chews grass, its calf watches and learns.” Children learn from their mothers and shape the world with those values.

Across cultures and generations, mothers have played a pivotal role in shaping societies. The Yoruba call her “Iya,” the Hausa call her “Uwa,” and the Igbo name her “Nne.” These words do not merely describe a mother; they represent life itself—a symbol of strength, wisdom, and endurance. Beyond the home, mothers are often the first educators, teaching values that shape future leaders, thinkers, and changemakers.

A Tribute to Mothers

Mother’s Day is a beautiful occasion to reflect on and honour the role of mothers in our lives. Their love, sacrifices, and wisdom shape us in ways that can never truly be repaid.

To every mother—biological, adoptive, stepmother, grandmother, or guardian—you are the light of the family. You are our strength, our first teachers, and our lifelong protectors.

Happy Mother’s Day!
