The University of Ibadan Students’ Union has announced the suspension of the planned Congress scheduled for Saturday, May 17, 2025, following a confrontation with a group of students.
In a statement jointly signed by the Union President, Covenant Odedele, and General Secretary, Segun V. Olowu, the Union disclosed that the decision became necessary after a group of students stormed the Kunle Adepeju Building to engage with Union Executives but became aggressive during the interaction.
“While they were welcomed and their questions were entertained and addressed in good faith, the engagement with these students suddenly took an aggressive turn,” the statement read.
The Union further alleged that the students “harassed and blocked the way forcefully for minutes.” It was also noted that during the incident, “the General Secretary sustained an injury to his arm.”
“This incident has raised significant concerns about the safety and security of our members, as well as the integrity of the planned Congress,” the memo stated.
“Under these circumstances, we unfortunately cannot proceed with the Congress at this time. The safety and well-being of all students are our utmost priority,” the Union concluded.
