The University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UI’SU) has issued an urgent warning to students, alerting them to ongoing fraudulent activities targeting the student community.

In a press release jointly signed by the General Secretary, Segun V. Olowu, and the President, Covenant Odedele, the Union disclosed that scammers have been contacting students while posing as student entrepreneurs, university staff, or house agents.

“These fraudsters are reaching out under the guise of offering assistance to clear extra years, secure accommodation, or provide products and services,” the memo reads. “They demand payment in return for services they cannot and do not intend to provide.”

Furthermore, the Union clarified that neither the University of Ibadan nor the Students’ Union solicits money from students for course clearance, accommodation, or payment of fees. It emphasized that all official university transactions follow verified procedures and should be confirmed through the appropriate channels.

Also, the Union provided several security tips to help students protect themselves. These include verifying all claims before making payments, avoiding unverified transactions, protecting personal information, being cautious of urgency tactics, and promptly reporting any suspected fraud to the Students’ Union or the University Security Unit.

The Union revealed that several scammers had already been apprehended through a joint effort with the University Security Unit. Despite this, they urged students to remain vigilant, particularly when interacting with individuals online.

UI’SU reaffirmed its commitment to student safety and called on the university community to stay alert and report any suspicious activity without delay.
